magnetic tapes.

Magnetic tapes

They are used for storage. Surface of the tape is magnetic. The tape is coiled onto a reel and can store a lot of data. Magnetic tapes only offer serial access.

If you want data that´s in the middle, you have to forward from the beginning. If you want quick regular access it is better to use a memory stick, a CD, DVD or hard drive.

fixed heads + moving heads and access time.

Access time.

The read/ write head of a hard disk needs to reach the correct track. On average it takes half a rotation to find the correct byte.

Time for head movement to track + time for half a rotation.
Fixed head + moving head.

Fixed head hard drives have a number of permanently stations heads that don´t move. No time is needed to reach the track; this makes access time much faster.

hard drive!

 Hard disks                                                                             ICT

A hard drive´s disk will spin between 5400and 7200 RPM. The discs in a hard drive are called platters.
On each disk there are tracks, where the information is saved. Tracks added together make cylinder.
The number of tracks on one disk/platter = number of cylinders in the hard drive.
There is normally one read per disk/platter. The storage of a hard drive is measured in GB´s or TB´s.

Number of readable sides
                  X
Number of cylinders
                  X
Number of sectors per tracks
                 X
Bytes per sector

Chapter 1 Questions

                                Chapter 1 Questions                                      africa bonilla
1.     Describe the similarities and differences between data and information.
DIFFERENCES
Data: a group of raw unprocessed information.
Eg:10092004
Information: data that has been processed so we can understand it. Eg: $100,920,04
SIMILARITIES
They are both data.

2.     Explain what  is meant by hardware.
Computer hardware is the collection of physical elements that                      comprise a computer system.
3.
Draw a labeled diagram of a desktop computer system showing the range of hardware devices that could be attached to it.

4.     Describe the similarities and differences between a desktop computer and a laptop computer.
           DIFFERENCES
A laptop is a computer which is designed to be portable. Usually this entails making sacrifices in terms of performance and utility. Laptops are intended for people who travel a lot and need a computer which can go with them.
A desktop computer is meant to be stationary. This usually results in a lower price and better options for upgrading. Desktops are intended for permanent workstations and generally have more power and storage capacity than laptops.

SIMILARITIES
THEY BOTH HAVE INTERNET CONNECTIONS,THEY BOTH NEED WiFI.

5.     Describe the similarities and differences between a desktop computer and a hand-held computer
Similarities-both go into internet, both have applications
Differences-the desktop is faster, the desktop is bigger.you cant carry it around.

6.     Explain how a tablet computer can benefit from having an external keyboard
It is easier to write ,because keyboard buttons are easier than   touch screen.

7.     Name two output devices and describe what they are used for .How are these devices connected to a computer?
Speakers and printer,speakers-to listen music
Printer-it gives you a hard copy of a document/picture.

8.     Is a game console an input or output device? Give reasons for your answers
Its both input and output.Because you can insert a game into the computer and also you can play a game in the computer and you can see it through the screen.
9.     Describe the advantages and disadvantages of multi-function printers that combine a printer, scanner and fax compared with using three single-function devices.
DISADVANTAGE
The biggest disadvantage of a multifunctional device becomes apparent when a problem occurs. Due to the multifunctional nature of the device, a problem with the printer may cause all features to fail.
ADVANTAGE
It is cheaper to buy the multifunctional that has the 3 of them that buying them separately.
